Chapter 16

Violet

Breakfast had been tense. From the second Ray appeared for breakfast like he had every morning before, I knew there was something on his mind. Breakfast was a quiet affair that morning. The only sounds were of knives scraping across plates, coffee being chugged, and Irving purring for more food. Ray kept eyeing me, but every time I tried to meet his stare, he’d divert his gaze.

I knew something terrible was coming, but I didn’t know what.

“Jeremiah, why don’t you and I go check on the cattle this morning. I don’t hear them as much as I usually do. If they’re on the edge of the property again, we might lose some,” my grandmother said.

“We can hop in the golf cart and go looking for them, sure,” my grandfather said.

“Petal, we’ll come back and clean up later. I don’t want the two of you worrying about this. Finish up your breakfast, then the two of you can spend some time together. Yes?” she asked.

I looked over at my grandmother and nodded. I sipped my orange juice as the two of them got up, making themselves scarce. Truth be told, I didn’t want to be alone with Ray right now. It was obvious that he needed us alone to talk about whatever it was running through his head, which meant them staying kept us in our own little bubble for a while longer.

Then again, we couldn’t live in our bubble forever.

“Violet, there’s something I want to discuss with you,” Ray said.

“I figured.”

He drew in a deep breath and sat back into his chair, trying to gather his thoughts.

“I have to go back to New York today,” he said.

I choked on the sip of my juice I had taken and started coughing. Despite all of my efforts to brace myself, I still wasn’t ready to hear those words. I picked up my napkin and coughed my orange juice into the fabric, feeling my eyes water. Ray pushed away from his chair and came around, rubbing my back and brushing my hair away from my face.

“That’s it. Get it up,” he said softly.

I coughed until my voice felt hoarse. And I used that coughing as an excuse to cry a little bit. I took a moment to myself. A moment to gather my thoughts as sadness overwhelmed me. I mean, I knew it was coming. It wasn’t as if he lived here. It wasn’t as if he could stay here with me forever on this farm with my grandparents.

It didn’t stop me from dreaming about it every night, though.

“You okay?” he asked.

I nodded, wiping at my eyes. “Yep. I’m good. Sorry. Wrong pipe.”

“I hate it when that happens.”

“Yeah. It sucks.”

Ray pulled up a chair beside me and grabbed my knees. He turned me to face him, red skin and all. I set the napkin off to the side and took a few deep breaths. They were shaky and without foundation, but I didn’t care. It was time to face reality, and it was time to have a conversation Ray had been prepared for since the moment he came into Big Timber.
